George Simion, executive president of the Unification Platform “Action 2012”, says he was briefly denied entry into Moldova on Tuesday because of his criticism against the authorities in Chisinau.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, George Simion said he was on his way from Bucharest to Chisinau when the border police at the Leuseni crossing point told him he was being denied entry and showed him a printed decision which, however, failed to explain the reasons. The Romanian national then returned to Iasi and later that day he repeated his attempt to cross the border, this time successfully.
“That decision was clearly an abuse. Abuses on the part of the Moldovan authorities must stop”, stated George Simion, adding he would challenge the decision in a Moldovan court.
Simion announced that he was planning to move to Chisinau in 2015 to lead an NGO that would monitor democratic and human rights violations.
Claudia Iovita, a member of the Platform, stated that no borders must be closed to the young people who fought for democracy in April 2009. Vlad Biletchi, another member, said the decision violated Simion's right to information as it didn't contain the mandatory reasoned part. The members said they would seek explanations from the Customs Service, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prior to this, George Simion visited Moldova on October 30.
