Unions urge measures to protect employees in hot weather

When air temperatures rise above +30 degrees Celsius, national laws require employers to reduce the intensity and rates of physical work, ensure adequate ventilation at workplaces, alternate dynamic with static efforts and allow intermissions, the National Confederation of Labor Unions recalls in a statement published on Tuesday, urging employers to ensure all the measures provided by the specific legislation to protect employees from the hazards of canicular weather, Info-Prim Neo reports. The organization also reminds employers that they are required to daily dispense two to four liters of saline or mineral carbonated water to each employee, to provide employees with individual safety equipment and provide access to showers. The employers who are unable to provide such conditions should confer with union members about a cut in operations during hot weather. Another recommendation is to ensure timely medical examination of employees to detect conditions that make work in hot environments inadvisable. Further, the Confederation requests relevant authorities to undertake inspections and other control measures to punish employers who fail to observe heat-related rules. Employees are advised to call the Confederation's round-the-clock helpline at (022)234090 to report violations. Under the existing labor legislation, employers who fail to take protection measures in hot weather are liable to fines ranging from 80 to 500 conventional units.
