Water in Nistru fell close to critical level of 8.3 meters

The level of water in the Nistru River fell from 11 to 8.4 meters during the last two months, the critical level being 8.3 meters. Even in such conditions, there are no reasons to declare a state of emergency, say officials of the Ministry of the Environment. According to them, the decline in the level of water during drought is a normal phenomenon, IPN reports.

In a communique, the Ministry says that the flow capacity of the Nistru is 130-140 cubic meters per second. According to the State Hydrometeorology Service, the flow capacity of the Nistru in Dubasari on August 6 was 131 cubic meters per second. The volume of water is sufficient for maintaining a constant ecological flow downstream for a period of a week. Thus, there is now no danger for the water pumping station in Vadul lui Voda town, which supplies drinking water to Chisinau municipality, to stop work.

Also, the Agency “Moldova’s Water” asked the State Committee on Water Management of Ukraine to consider the possibility of increasing the volume of water discharged into the Nistru to 180-200 cubic meters per second so as to remedy the created situation. The water reserves of the reservoir in Ukraine’s Dnestrovsk are enough for maintaining the constant flow of the river.

A yellow code advisory for hydrological drought was issued for the period between August 3 and 10. The negative effects of the drought include the drying up of the small rivers and wells and the considerable decline in the level of water in Moldova’s main river – the Nistru.
