The strong wind that caused havoc throughout Europe on January 27 and 28 left about 100 Moldovan settlements in blackout. On the eve, the State Hydrometeorology Service warned that the northwest wind will strengthen to 15-23 metres per second under the influence of an atmospheric front coming from northwest and southeast. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the spokesman for the Department for Emergencies Alexandru Oprea said there was reported no victim and major damage as in Austria, Romania, Poland and the Czech Republic. At the same time, the wind left about 100 settlements without electricity in different spaces of time. On Monday morning, 26 settlements in the districts of Nisporeni, Rezina, Criuleni, Leova, Orhei, and Floresti were partially or fully disconnected from the power supply system. Some 180 slates and three cubic metres of timber were damaged on the roof of the dormitory of the Agrotechnical College in Rascani town. The damage was estimated at about 16,000 lei. The wind pulled 45 slates off the roof of a house in Calugar village, Falesti district; 100 slates off the roof of the secondary school in Buciumeni village, Ungheni district, and 20 slates off the roof of the Creation School in Ocnita town. Galina Leahu, deputy head of the Green Spaces Association, told Info-Prim Neo that 25 trees were uprooted in the municipality of Chisinau, especially pyramidal poplars. She said that the most serious such accidents occurred on 5/2 Zelinki Street, 9 Sarmisegetuza Street and 32 Zelinski Street, where the branches broke the electric power lines, and in other districts. Three trees fell to the ground one over another on Aldea-Teodorovici Street. No casualties were reported. Two cars parked nearby were damaged by the falling trees. According to Galina Leahu, even if the wind caused damage, it cannot be compared with the deaths caused for instance in Poland. The meteorologists forecast moderate to strong northwest wind for today.
