World population to reach 7bn at end-October

The world's population is set to reach seven billion by the end of the month. The United Nations Population Fund is predicting that the milestone will be hit on October 31. However, Moldova will not see a demographic growth. On the contrary, the country’s population decreases significantly, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from UNFPA. During the launch of the annual State of the World Population Report, titled "People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion" in London on October 26, the new UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehim said the reaching of the ceiling of 7 billion can be regarded as a challenge, an opportunity and a call to action. 1.8 billion of the 7 billion people are young people aged between 10 and 24. “The young people are the key to the future because they are able to radically change the global political situation and accelerate the economic development of their countries, owing to their artistic potential and innovative capacities,” said Osotimehin. In Moldova, the official launch of the report took place at the Balti-based State Universit “Alecu Russo”. The report was presented by the UNFPA Deputy Representative in Moldova Boris Gilca. Unlike the situation in the world, the population in Moldova is decreasing. One of the causes is the falling birth rate that is influenced by a number of factors, including the rise in the average age at marriage, the postponement in giving birth, the increase in the age of mothers at firth birth, the reduction in the number of children in the family. Boris Gilca spoke about the activities that will be organized by UNFPA Moldova on the occasion of the day of “7 billion”. They include the production of a video themed “Let’s help Moldova grow!” that will be broadcast on national TV channels. The Report includes a look at how the world reached 7 billion, such as the large strides in health care that allow older people to live longer, more children to survive to adulthood and beyond, as well as policies and other initiatives that allow women to play a stronger role in society. This overview includes analysis of the latest demographic trends, such as the largest-ever cohort of young people around the world, and the growing number of megacities, and will describe some of the implications for the quality of life of women, men and young people.
