WWII remains reburied at Speia Memorial

The remains of 28 unidentified soldiers who died in battle during World War II operations in Moldova were reburied with due honors on Saturday into a common grave at the Speia Memorial, in Anenii-Noi district. The ceremony was attended by both officials and locals, who brought flowers and expressed words of recognition for the heroes who died in battle, Info-Prim Neo reports. The remains of the unidentified soldiers were unearthed in the area of the Serpeni battlefield, which saw heavy fighting in the spring and summer of 1944, by the members of a Russian historical club operating in Moldova, who managed to retrieve the remains of other 36 soldiers in 2010. Officiating at the event, Russian Ambassador to Moldova Valeri Kuzmin praised the effort of the young battlefield archeologists. “It is important that the young generation honor the memory of these heroes and do what their predecessors didn't manage to. The reburial of these remains is not just an act of respect, this is also an act which is in line with the Christian values that we share. That war was very bloody and many people were left to lie here in the battlefield without being properly buried”. MP Igor Dodon, the Communist candidate for Chisinau Mayor's seat, also attended the event and made an emotive speech, declaring that the celebration of the Victory Day was often undervalued by some Moldovan politicians. The reburial ceremony was organized by the Russian Embassy in Moldova and the Moldova's Russian Community as part of events marking the 66th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the WWII.
