16 accidents and 8 deaths during 24 hours

Sixteen road accidents have happened in Moldova during the last 24 hours. They resulted in eight deaths and 12 persons injured, Olga Baciu, press officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, said at a news conference on December 29. A Volkswagen Passat driven by a Balti resident aged 33 struck two pedestrians on the Balti-Chisinau-Odessa route near Corlateni village of Rascani district on December 28. As a result of the impact, a 38-year-old pedestrian died on the spot, while his wife aged 32 died in the hospital several hours later. “Another traffic accident occurred on the Mihailovca-Porumbeni-Valea Perjei route in Cimislia district on the same day. A 22-year-old man driving a Hyundai Sonata at high speed made a U-turn and crashed into a Volvo driven by man aged 34. The driver and two occupants of the Hyundai died immediately,” Olga Baciu said. Three more persons were killed in another three car accidents. The police call on the motorists to outfit their vehicles with winter equipment, be careful on the roads and strictly observe the traffic rules.
