CEC spent money earmarked for elections within set limits, Audit Office
Significant changes happened in the process of spending public money during the last few years, Deputy Minister of Finance Maria Caraus said following the presentation by the Audit Office of the audit report on the use by the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the money allocated for organizing the November 2010 elections. The audit revealed a series of insignificant faults in the use of budgetary money, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The CEC spent about 37 million lei of the approximately 40 million lei allocated.
“As a result of the audit performed by the Audit Office, it was established that the earmarked money was spent within the set limits. 92.6% or 34 million lei went on goods and services, including the remuneration for persons who worked for electoral offices,” senior state inspector Simion Bostanaru said in a meeting of the Audit Office on July 18.
The identified irregularities concern the remuneration of employees, contracting out of goods and services, inexact observance of certain norms regulating the financial-budgetary procedures and the
lack of appropriate internal control at the CEC.
Audit Office president Serafim Urecheanu recommended the Commission to examine the cases of illegal payment of salaries to the employees involved in elections and to work out and implement efficient internal control procedures and policies that would prevent the commission of irregularities in the future and would ensure the observance of all the norms.
CEC chairman Iurie Ciocan said the Commission will take account of the recommendations made by the Audit Office.
