Court refuses to pardon man convicted of gang rape

The Centru District Court rejected an application for amnesty submitted by a man sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment for raping and severely beating, together with his brother and a friend, a young woman just days before her wedding. The shocking story which happened 4 years ago was recounted to Info-Prim Neo by the victim's mother in {an article published on Tuesday, July 19}. After years of struggle and trials, the victim's family eventually saw the three rapists sentenced to jail terms of 5 and 6 years. However, one of them managed to escape before being put to jail and is now wanted, and a second was pardoned in February. The victim's mother complained that the amnesty decision had been taken with numerous violations and appealed. The appellate court returned the case to the Centru District Court and assigned it to a different panel. In a hearing on July 21, the court decided to reject the amnesty request. “These judges were objective and fair. They examined the case thoroughly and found the violations”, said the victim's mother after the hearing.
