The Party of Socialists will support presidential candidate Nicolae Timofti after he goes through the three filters announced by the party. In a news conference on Monday, the Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon said that the applicant for the post of President must be apolitical, be supported by at least 58 candidates and take the statehood test, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Igor Dodon said that Nicolae Timofti went through the first filter as he forms part of no political party. As to the support offered by the AEI MPs, things will become clear after the applicant’s documents are filed to special commission for the election of the head of state. The statehood test will be given in a meeting of the candidate with members of the Party of Socialists.
Igor Dodon said that a meeting of the Party of Socialists’ National Council will be convened on March 15 to decide whether to support Nicolae Timofti or not. “We should be patient. We have waited for two years and a half and the political crisis is now close to being unlocked,” he stated.
On March 12, the leaders of the Alliance for European Integration announced that Nicolae Timofti is the ruling alliance’s candidate for the presidency. The presidential elections will take place in Parliament on March 16, starting at 3pm.
