Information Development Ministry starts receiving orders for biometric passports
The Ministry of Information Development will soon make biometric passports available to Moldovan citizens, with the first orders to be accepted during the 2008 Made in Moldova Expo, to take place on February 7-10, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Biometric passport processing fees range from 1,250 lei if the passport is required within a month’s time, to 3,330 lei if the passport is required within four hours.
The passport’s cover will bear a distinct mark which confirms that the document contains biometric information of the holder. A computer chip stores the holder’s biometrics, including fingerprints of both indexes. The information is introduced through a special mechanism and afterwards confirmed by a digitised signature, which guarantees the integrity of the personality and the accuracy of the information introduced into the chip.
The chip is inserted into the passport’s cover, which makes it virtually immune to physical damage and attempts of removing it. The information stored on the chip is readable only by special equipment installed at border checkpoints. Two terminals are now operational at the Chisinau International Airport. The terminal-server verification times are in a five-second range.
