The first translation of the poem “Luceafarul” (Morning star) by Mihai Eminescu into Gagauz has appeared. Eminescu’s masterpiece was translated by ambassador Fiodor Angheli. Fiodor Angheli stated on Thursday, March 12, for Info-Prim Neo that he had worked more than a year on translating the poem. The Gagauz version is very close to the original as form: quatrains with coupled rhyme, the same metrical style and rhythm, the iamb foot. The translator has also left unchanged the names of characters - Luceafar (Lucafar), Catalina (Katalina), Hyperion (Giperion). The translated poem has the title “Coban yildizi-culpan” (The shepherd's star), as Venus is called in Gagauz. “Luceafarul” is published in a bilingual edition. The translator thinks that the book will be useful for both teachers and pupils, this way, and for all the ones eager to learn one of those languages, Romanian and Gagauz. Besides the poem, the book also includes the translation of Eminescu’s fairy tales “Fat-Frumos din lacrima” – “Gozyasindan duuan Fat-Frumos,” that, in the translator’s opinion, is the most important work in prose of the national genius. But Fiodor Angheli translated the fairy tale in verses. Another book of translations signed by Fiodor Angheli was previously published. It is “Masallar” (“Fairy tales,”) including 5 fairy tales by A.S. Pushkin in Gagauz. Now Fiodor Angheli has decided to offer the Gaguz people a translation of departed poet Grigore Vieru’s poems as a gift.
