The head of the Ialoveni Probation Office has been arrested by officers from the National Anti-corruption Center (NAC) on suspicion of requesting bribes from a man sentenced to two years' probation.

NAC said in a press release that the woman repeatedly asked money from the offender after he violated the probation terms. To avoid going to prison, the man at first gave the probation officer 200 euros, then 1,000 lei, and was supposed to deliver 3,000 lei more ahead of the winter holidays.

In a NAC sting operation yesterday, the woman was caught receiving the 3,000 lei bribe in her office.

The probation officer is now in NAC's custody for 72 hours. She faces 10 years in prison, a large fine and a ban from holding public offices for a period of up to 10 years.
