Persons with diabetes to receive glucometers gratis

The persons who suffer from sugar diabetes will be provided with glucometers free of charge within an event that is held in Chisinau on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, marked on November 14, the second consecutive year, Info-Prim Neo reports. Luminita Suveica, the head of the Municipal Health Division, said the list of recipients will be compiled based on the recommendations of family doctors. A glucometer in drugstores costs about US$100. On November 12, the municipal medical associations will stage the Open Doors Day. All those who want will be able to measure the concentration of glucose in the blood gratis, without scheduling an appointment. The patients will also receive a brochure about how to keep sugar diabetes under control. Diabetes occurs because the body can't use glucose properly, either owing to a lack of the hormone insulin or because the insulin available doesn't work effectively. In most cases, it's possible to reduce the risk of complications by following medical advice and keeping diabetes under control. It's vitally important for people with diabetes to check their glucose levels regularly at home and to attend hospital check-ups so that problems can be detected and treated early. In Moldova there are more than 60,000 persons suffering from diabetes, 360 of whom are children. The number of persons with diabetes rises early by 6%, but doctors say the real number is at least two times higher. In 20% of the cases, the persons have type 1 diabetes that must be treated with insulin.
