Containers from 12 types of plastic will be recycled and used as raw material for making similar objects within a pilot project that was designed and is implemented for the first time by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in cooperation with a private company. The project was presented at the processing plant on June 12, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The project is very useful as it helps transform the waste into new objects. Currently, we have 3 million tonnes of plastic waste and this figure reveals the ecological state,” Prime Minister Vlad Filat said in the event. He stressed the necessity of adopting a law on waste management that would lay down obligations for the authorities as regards the collection and delivery of such garbage to those that can process it. “We are yet to discuss the use of the money from the ecological fund, which is collected from the ecological tax paid by those who use plastic to pack food products. This money should be used to stimulate the processing of plastic waste,” said the Premier. The president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca said the given project is an example for solving an ecological and economic problem. “We can produce tiles and bricks and other objects from plastic. The price of these products is competitive because we buy the waste. It is important that our technology does not use water in the processing process, as in other states,” he said. “The material is collected, separated and then chopped, melted and processed at different temperatures and under different pressure. Afterward, it is shaped,” said an employee of the plant. The company employs 15 persons. Its processing capacity is about 20 tonnes of plastic a month. The used objects are bought from people and companies specialized in waste collection. A sum of 2.4 million lei was allocated for implementing the project. Half of the investments were provided by the Academy of Sciences, while the other half by the private company.
