Prominent linguist Valentin Mandacanu dies

After a long struggle with a disease, linguist and author Valentin Mandacanu passed away. An obituary issued by the Government reads that Valentin Mandacanu was a fighter for the Romanian language, an active supporter of the national revival movement and a defender of the nation's values, as his essay “The garment of being” led to a mass movement for the return to the Romanian language and Latin writing, Info-Prim Neo reports. Valentin Mandacanu had a prodigious career as a translator at Moldova' s Telegraphic Agency (ATEM), and then as a contributor to the Soviet Moldovan Encyclopedia (1979), where he was fired for the “Romanization” of the language. His volume “The right word in the right place” set an example in the work of promoting and improving Romanian language in Moldova. Valentin Mandacanu was a member of the first Parliament and voted for Moldova's independence. In 2009, the Chisinau Municipal Council awarded him the title of honorary citizen of the capital. In 2010, he received the Order of the Republic for special merits in asserting the scientific truth and national spiritual values. He was born on July 27, 1930, in Mihaileni village, Balti county.
