South Asian earthquake: Thousands of deaths reported

At least 1,700 people have been reported dead, about three thousand injured and hundreds of people have been searched for after the powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, IPN reports.

Four people were pulled out from rubble nearly 60 hours after the earthquake occurred, and hundreds of other people remain missing. Rescuers continue the search and rescue efforts in both Myanmar and Thailand, the BBC reported.

In Bangkok, the death toll has risen to 18 people, and 76 workers on a construction site are still nowhere to be found after the tall building they were erecting collapsed.

On Saturday, March 29, a woman was rescued in Myanmar's capital, Nay Pyi Taw, after being trapped for 36 hours under the rubble of a hospital.

After a 5-hour operation, rescuers today managed to rescue a woman from under the ruins of a hotel in the city of Mandalay in Myanmar. The woman had stayed under the rubble for almost 60 hours, and now her life is out of danger, according to The Guardian.

Another 29 people were rescued from under the rubble of a residential block that collapsed in Mandalay, the local fire authority announced on Sunday, March 31.

The earthquake occurred on Friday at around 12:50 local time, 10 km above the surface, which means that its effects at ground level were felt more strongly than a deeper earthquake.

The second earthquake occurred 12 minutes later, with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale.

And the third earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, was recorded on Sunday, March 30, northwest of Mandalay.
