Thousands verified their blood sugar levels today

Tens of thousands of people today were able to check their blood sugar levels at over 100 mobile centers set up across Moldova to mark the World Diabetes Day, Info-Prim Neo reports. In his speech today, Health Minister Andrei Usatii has noted that diabetes is a global problem that causes a host of complications, affecting the eyes and kidneys, among other vital organs. Lately, more and more young people have been affected by diabetes, with the rate of young sufferers in Moldova nearing 20 percent of the total. Another important indicator is the number of diabetes cases that led to disabilities. The number of disabilities caused by diabetes rose by 3%, in particular among the sufferers who get their condition diagnosed too late. The Minister stated that the demand for insulin is fully covered in Moldova. He revealed that a new national center for diagnosing diabetes has been inaugurated recently. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that, within the framework of this year's diabetes awareness campaign, there will be donated 7,500 glucometers and consumables as well as 1,000 pairs of glasses for those whose vision has been impaired by the condition. In Moldova, there are over 67,000 people living with diabetes, including 12,000 insulin-dependent sufferers.
