The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has imposed sanctions on pro-Kremlin agents responsible for election fraud in Moldova, including asset freezes and travel bans, according to a press release from the British Embassy in Chisinau, cited by IPN.
"The sanctions target a network of pro-Russian actors in Moldova, known as Evrazia, operating on behalf of fugitive corrupt oligarch Ilan Shor, who was sanctioned by the UK in 2022 for destabilizing democracy in Moldova and spreading Russia’s hostile influence," the British diplomatic mission stated.
This package of sanctions is the latest action in the UK’s anti-corruption and dirty money crackdown, launched by the British Foreign Secretary.
Among those sanctioned are: Nelli Parutenko, founder and director of Evrazia, Natalia Parasca, leader of the “Renastere” Party, supported by Shor and a board member of Evrazia, Marina Tauber, an MP closely associated with fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.
UK Foreign Secretary: "We Will Not Stand By", "These sanctions send a clear message: We will not stand by while Russia undermines democracy and the rule of law, threatening the national security of our friends and partners," said UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, as quoted in the press release.
"Left unchecked, this kind of insidious corruption can erode the very foundations of our society, opening the door for Russia and other malicious actors to expand their influence and compromise the stability of our neighbors and the UK," he added.
Evrazia is a Russian non-profit organization that was used by Ilan Shor to bribe Moldovan citizens into voting “No” in last year’s October referendum on Moldova’s EU accession.
The Moldovan police revealed that approximately 130,000 citizens received a total of $15 million from Evrazia, with payments ranging from $50 per month for “supporters” to over $2,500 per month for “leaders”.
