Victor Ponta: Chisinau politicians must put political battles aside if they want EU membership

Politicians in Chisinau need to sit down at the discussion table rather than fight among themselves if they truly want Moldova to join the European Union. This statement was made by Victor Ponta during an interview with IPN.

"Romania joined the European Union because, at some point, political leaders - all of them - agreed on the famous Snagov Pact and said: 'We will not fight each other on this matter.' What I see in Chisinau is political conflict. Those in power are considered very good and pro-European, while everyone else is labeled anti-European. That is a lie - it’s a lie in Romania as well," said Victor Ponta, an independent candidate for the presidency.

At this moment, the most important goal for the Republic of Moldova is to become part of the European Union, and Romania will always be a strong supporter of this process, Ponta emphasized.

"Otherwise, the safest and fastest path is unification with Romania. And to be clear, not by force - Romania is not sending in the army to take Moldova. It would only happen through referendums in both countries. I would like to see such a referendum in Romania, and I am convinced that the majority of Romanians would vote in favor. Beyond that, it is up to the citizens of Moldova to decide," the former Romanian prime minister stated.

The government in Chisinau must move beyond empty political statements, Ponta added. Concrete measures are needed, primarily to align living standards.

"I believe Romania is providing significant support, but less ideology will help Moldova reach the European Union faster. Too much ideology and too much political infighting will only slow down your path to EU membership," said Victor Ponta.
