Current Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase believes that the office of President of Moldova may be removed given the permanent political crisis as regards the election of the head of state. If the political system of Moldova remains unchanged, an apolitical candidate for the presidency is out of the question, the minister said in a recent meeting of the Chisinau Press Club, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I think we must decide whether we need the post of President or not. We must determine the most suitable formula for Moldova. We haven’t had a head of state for two years and we did not feel his absence much. Maybe we should think about another type of constitutional reform,” Alexandru Tanase said.
He expressed his conviction that the post of President cannot be filled by an apolitical candidate. “An apolitical person cannot hold the most political position in the state,” he stressed.
The minister said the President remains an important political figure of distinct political orientation, even if the candidate leaves the party of which he is a member after elected. “What does this change? I left the Liberal Democratic Party, but my political beliefs did not change. The people have certain convictions. If the person is interested and involved in the political affairs, the membership in a party does not matter,” he stated.
Alexandru Tanase said it is rumored that he might be fielded as an apolitical candidate for head of state if the ruling alliance does not manage to promote Marian Lupu. “I think that in such situations we must discuss very realistic things. There was no such proposal and nobody discussed such a possibility seriously. There were hypotheses, but there are many hypotheses,” he said.
Recently, Alexandru Tanase was designated by the Government as judge of the Constitutional Court. He was sworn in as judge in Parliament. Within 30 days of the appointment, he is to vacate the seat of minister of justice.
