Appeals Court could pronounce on case of Filat Nov. 11

The Chisinau Appeals Court is expected to pass judgment in the case of ex-Premier Vlad Filat on November 11. Asked by journalists when he anticipates that the decision will be given, when going out of the courtroom after the November 9 hearing, Vlad Filat said this could happen on Friday, when he will have his last word, while the parties will present the closing argument, IPN reports.

“Vlad Filat’s intuition usually tells things right. We will see what happens Friday,” said lawyer Igor Popa. According to him, the judges intended to set the next hearing for November 10, but scheduled it for November 11 at the insistence of the defense. The given hurry reveals a decision is wanted as soon as possible and this can be related to this Sunday’s elections. However, Vlad Filat does not have a fair trial and the sentence will be illegal.

Today, the former Premier’s defense asked to replace the panel of judges and to repeatedly summon the witnesses from Russia. According to Igor Popa, all their requests were rejected. They will yet submit a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office to demand that Ilan Shor, based on whose statements Vlad Filat was arrested, should be held accountable for perjury.

Vlad Filat was sentenced to nine years in jail, fined 60,000 lei and is to have property to the value of 791 million lei confiscated. He pleads not guilty.
