Members and supporters of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), mostly pensioners, protested in front of the Government Building. They accused the government of “social genocide” and demanded that this should leave, IPN reports.
Ludmila Ghinda, head of the veterans’ organization “Equity”, said the people have reached the poverty line. “When the bills come, the people suffer strokes because they cannot pay such amounts. It’s a real genocide,” said the woman, noting that it is necessary to revise the law on pensions as the state must take care of the welfare of every citizen.
MP Inga Sibova stressed that pensioners took to the streets today because there is “a traitor named Maia Sandu” in power who, “when she came to power, brought with her several traitors who destroy the country.” “What they are doing can only be called robbery and banditry,” stated the MP.
MP Eduard Smirnov accused the government of not knowing what the economy is and of starting to destroy the country as soon as it came to power.
Chairman of the Chisinau Council of Veterans Yuri Yeremin said the pensioners should be more critical of the government. “We, the veterans, created the national economy, built the country and the government must be open to us. Let’s remember the times Moldova was flourishing. Back then, the country was run by professionals,” noted the veteran.
MP Alla Darovannaya said that this year too, the indexation of pensions will not cover the real increase in prices. BCS has registered in Parliament a draft law that ensures a pension indexation coefficient equal to the average inflation rate for the last three years. It will bring an indexation rate of 15.7% this April. “We will insist on the adoption of this bill,” stressed the lawmaker.
“We do not comment on protesters’ demands, but anyone has the right to protest, surely in accordance with the law and respecting the rights of other citizens,” the Government’s spokesman Daniel Vodă told reporters. “The Government, in turn, continues its mission to contribute to the improvement of living conditions through the programs and actions it carries out. We do not want to politicize topics when we think about citizens’ interests and invite all stakeholders to contribute with concrete solutions for the benefit of the people,” stated Daniel Vodă.
