The Community Party (PCRM) announced the creation of the People’s Congress as a counterbalance of the Alliance for European Integration. The Congress will consist of representatives of settlements from all over Moldova and will work on the basis of the electoral platform of the PCRM, the party’s head Vladimir Voronin said in a press briefing on July 13, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Today, after the democratic institutions in Moldova were destroyed and vandalized, the democratic system can no more be built from above. It should be erected from the lower levels, basing on the town and village councils, where the majority is or will be soon interested in really modernizing the country,” said Vladimir Voronin. He also said that this congress will be the legal counterbalance of the present administration in the form of a responsible power of the people. “We initiate this process openly, without hiding, and invite representatives of civil society and parties to join us. We call on those who realized during the last two years that democracy is close to being liquidated to unite forces,” stated Vladimir Voronin. According to the Communist leader, the forces of the future People’s Congress include 30 towns and town councils, among which Chisinau, Balti, Soroca, and Cahul. “In the near future, we will build by concerted effort a more powerful body that will be more representative and legitimate than this group of acting heads of state,” said Vladimir Voronin. He stressed that the congress will be a gift to Moldova on the 20th anniversary of the declaration of independence.
