Communists’ political statement fails to be put to vote in Parliament

The MPs expressed differing opinions about the draft statements concerning the inviolability of the sovereignty, independence and permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova proposed by the Communist group. The Socialist MPs supported the statements, while the Liberals and Liberal-Democrats opposed it. The draft statement could not be voted in Parliament as the quorum wasn’t present, IPN reports.

Communist MP Inna Supac said such a statement is needed to combat the public statements and actions concerning the statehood of Moldova that infringe on the Constitution’s fundamental principles.

According to the draft statement, Parliament confirms its devotion to the incontestable principle enshrined in Article 1 of the Constitution, which stipulates that the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign, independent, united and undividable state. It declares that the permanent neutrality proclaimed by the Constitution represents not only an expression of the peaceful and friendly character of the existence and development of our state, but also a conscious necessity.

The statement calls on the representatives of the public authorities, intellectual elites, parties and political movements to combine efforts to ensure and defend the sovereignty, independence, individuality, unity and neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. It also calls upon the international organizations and other countries to support the initiative to keep Moldova’s sovereignty.

Socialist MP Vlad Batrancea urged the MPs to adopt the statement by which to clearly state the legislature’s attitude to the country’s sovereignty and statehood. “Our group is sure that this statement is very topical because of the dangers that we witness daily. The Socialists will support this statement,” he stated.

The Lib-Dems suggested demanding the withdrawal of the Russian army from Moldova’s territory by the same statement.

Liberal MP Alina Zotea said the Liberals support Moldova’s independence because the union with Romania cannot occur otherwise. “We, those who promote the union, realize that the union with the motherland can take place only if Moldova exists as an independent state,” she noted.

The draft statement wasn’t put to the vote owing to the lack of quorum.
