Filat’s lawyers challenge decision to extend arrest warrant

The Buiucani District Court’s decision to extend the warrant for the arrest of ex-Premier Vlad Filat for 30 days was disputed in the Appeals Court.

One of Filat’s lawyers Igor Popa has told IPN that their application is to be examined within three days. The appeal was filed in the afternoon of October 20. Earlier, the defense said that if the Appeals Court upholds the decision, they will go to the European Court of Human Rights.

Liberal-Democratic MP Vlad Filat was deprived of parliamentary immunity by the votes of 79 lawmakers, following a request made by the prosecutor general. He is suspected of passive corruption and influence peddling. After the vote in Parliament, Vlad Filat was escorted to the National Anticorruption Center and was then placed under arrest for 72 hours. On October 18, the warrant for his arrest was extended for 30 days.
