Ghimpu questioned by prosecutors

The Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu was summoned to the Prosecutor General’s Office.  After being questioned, he said that he was called to make depositions over the transfer by an Italian businessman of money to the party, IPN reports.

Mihai Ghimpu stated that he was invited for questioning after the press reported that an Italian businessman financed the party during the election campaign of 2010 and the donor later won a number of important projects with the assistance of the Ministry of the Environment.

The Liberal leader said that he knows nothing about such a transaction and the party he heads was financed legally only by Moldovans. “All the documents presented to the Central Election Commission show who financed the party. I control the important aspects, like the political and financial ones, in the party,” he added.

He also said that the party shouldn’t be affected by certain dubious transactions in which it wasn’t involved. “The party didn’t receive money. We didn’t even discuss such an issue. If somebody took the money for personal purposes, they should answer according to the law. Everyone should answer for what they do. I authorized no one to take the money in the party’s name and to put it in one’s own pocket,” he said, referring to Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru.

According to him, if it’s proven that the transaction took place, it will mean that the members discredited the party.
