Governor urges Mayors to update voters’ lists
The governor of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal urged the mayors in the region to update the lists of voters for the elections of the People’s Assembly. According to him, the elections will be invalidated in some of the localities, because of the low turnout, reports Info-Prim Neo, citing www.gagauzinfo.md.
“Usually, Mayors simply use the lists from the State Registry and include all the voters on the basic lists. Among them, there people who still hold Moldovan citizenship, but haven’t been living here for 15 years. The lists also include many deceased people”, said the governor.
According to Formuzal, if the number of voters included on the basic lists is too high, the turnout may not be sufficient for validating the elections.
In September, the Gagauz voters will be called to elect the 35 members of the local legislative body. Parties, electoral blocs and other political associations can submit a single candidate for each of the 35 electoral precincts. In those precincts where no candidate obtains at least 50% of the votes, a second round of elections will be organized.
