Former Prime Minister Iurie Leanc says the talks on the formation of the new government must be hastened so that an IMF Mission could be invited for negotiating a new program. Otherwise, Moldova will experience default, especially after the EU announced that the provision of the about €47 million in financial support to Moldova was suspended, IPN reports.
Iurie Leanca told the journalists that in the absence of a program with the IMF and without the EU budget support payments, Moldova will miss about 2 billion lei and money for pensions and salaries may be insufficient. He called on the three pro-European parties – the Democratic Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Liberal Party – to analyze the situation of Greece after a populist party took over there. The unaffiliated lawmaker said Moldova also has such parties, like those headed by Igor Dodon and Renato Usatyi. According to Leanca, Moldova could reach a situation similar to that of Greece or worse.
The unaffiliated MP requested inviting the administration of the Ministry of Finance to Parliament so as to discuss an anti-crisis program that would be implemented if Moldova does not manage to obtain budget support by this yearend. Iurie Leanca urged the ruling parties to leave their ambitions aside and to start the talks immediately, as every day is important, and they should not hope that the international organizations will postpone their vacation for the sake of Moldova, while waiting for a government to be formed by a miracle.
He noted that he is and his colleague Eugen Carpov are ready to support a new government that will enjoy majority support in Parliament and will pledge to fulfill the commitments made to the EU.
Recently, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola underlined the importance of a governing coalition being formed as soon as possible. He said that upon assuming office, a new government should send without delay a request to the International Monetary Fund for negotiations on a new IMF program as the approval of such a program would restore trust in Moldova’s macro-financial stability, and pave the way to the resumption of budget support disbursements under EU assistance.
