Lifting of parliamentary immunity is a sensitive issue, statement

The lifting of the parliamentary immunity for the reason that an MP stated a political position is a sensitive issue, considers the leader of the Democratic faction Dumitru Diacov. He made the statement in reaction to the information that the Prosecutor General’s Office asked lifting the immunity of a number of Communist lawmakers who staged a protest on February 3 and hindered the work of the commission on national security, defense and public order, Info-Prim Neo reports. Dumitru Diacov considers the MPs and the ordinary people should be equal before the law and if a lawmaker committed a fraud, they must answer. “What they did (the Communist MPs) is not at all nice. I would not admit something like this. But I cannot say if lifting the parliamentary immunity is necessary in this case. There is a specialized commission that will examine the situation. I think lifting it for the fact that an MP expressed his/her political opinion is a sensitive issue,” he stated. The head of the Liberal-Democratic faction Valeriu Strelet said the Prosecutor General’s Office wants the active participants in those protests to be punished administratively as they broke the Law on Assembly, which bans holding protests inside administrative buildings. He reminded that the PLDM earlier proposed that Moldova should follow the example or other states and either renounce the parliamentary immunity or institute limited parliamentary immunity. This will make the lawmakers be more rational in their actions and more respectful of the law. The press officer of the Prosecutor General’s Office Maria Vieru has told Info-Prim Neo that no application to lift the immunity of Communist MPs was submitted to Parliament.
