Maia Sandu: Belgium firmly supports Moldova in its aspiration to join big European family

Belgium, which is one of the six founding countries of the European Union, firmly supports the Republic of Moldova in its aspiration to become part of the big European family. President Maia Sandu said that Belgium, whose area is comparable to Moldova’s, is a good example of the fact that in the European Union all the states are respected, regardless of size. “What really matters is our unity and aspiration to live in peace and freedom,” stated President Sandu, who welcomed Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on Wednesday, IPN reports.

The two officials met with young people from a number ofl high schools of Chisinau, with whom they discussed Moldova’s future in the EU.

“The young people will benefit from the accession to the EU the most. So, it is crucial that their voices are heard, that the choices made today are reflected in the future, in shaping the European Moldova, as they want it. I urged the young generation to be active, to get involved and promote the European values, including in this autumn’s referendum. The European integration is not about politics and parties. The European integration is a country project, a project of everyone, and it is about how the next generations will live – in peace, in a democratic, prosperous and safe European country,” said President Sandu.

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on March 11, 1992. Belgium opened its embassy in Chisinau in September last year.
