The political parties of Moldova also marked May 9, but in a different way, IPN reports.
On the occasion of 68 years of the end of the Second World War, the leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party, MPs and ministers rendered homage to those killed in battle, laying flowers at the memorial complex “Eternity”. The chairman of the PLDM Vlad Filat told the press that May 9 is an important day when peace was established on the European continent.
Members and sympathizers of the Communist Party went on a march from the Great National Assembly Square to the memorial complex “Eternity”. They carried red flags with the symbols of Communism – the hammer and sickle – on them. These symbols were banned by law last year. The leader of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin said that May 9 is a historical day as it is the day when mankind was liberated from fascism.
Members of the Democratic Party, lawmakers and ministers, went in a column to the memorial complex “Eternity”, led by the party’s chairman Marian Lupu. They laid flowers at the graves of soldiers killed in World War II. Marian Lupu told the press that Victory Day is a holiday that must be marked and this day does not allow forgetting the atrocities of war.
The fourth parliamentary party, the Liberal Party, didn’t stage public events. The party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of Europe Day. “This day should remain in the continent’s history as a day when we feel the sentiment of free life and see understanding between nations and mutual respect. By determination and perseverance, we must achieve our goal of joining the large European family,” said Mihai Ghimpu.
The Council for Reforming the Liberal Party issued a communiqué, expressing its disagreement over the holding of the concert organized by the Embassy of Russia in the Great National Assembly Square on May 9, saying this action is defying, cynical and in the spirit of the traditions of the Soviet past. It also expressed its special respect for the veterans who survived the Second World War, saying they commemorate the parents and grandparents killed in battle, regardless of the side on which they fought.
The Party of Socialists marked the Victory Day in a number of districts. In a communiqué, the party informed that the activists of the party and the youth movement “Youth Guard”, together with World War II veterans, laid flowers at the monuments in memory of those killed in battle. The Socialists cleaned up 15 military cemeteries, will distribute 15,000 Saint George Ribbons and visited about 1,500 veterans at home to congratulate them.
