Mihai Ghimpu skeptical that head of state will be elected

“I don’t think that the President will be elected. There are a number of undertones that lead to early elections,” the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said in the program “Public Life” on Radio National, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mihai Ghimpu said that the early elections will be as useless as Article 78 of the Constitution, which describes the procedure for electing the head of state, wasn’t amended. “No party will manage to gain 61 of the seats in Parliament in the early elections. What did we solve? We should have amended the Constitution,” he said. Even if he is skeptical that the current legislature will elect the President, Mihai Ghimpu said the person who will be fielded for this post must represent the parties of the Alliance for European Integration, which assumed responsibility before the people. “We answer before the people, we implement reforms. The President must represent these three parties. It is impossible to elect an apolitical head of state as Voronin wants,” said Mihai Ghimpu. According to him, an apolitical President is a utopian idea. “We vote him in and he will want a party and more power. This post should belong to those who undertook a government program and made promises to the people,” said the Liberal leader. As to the expected Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Mihai Ghimpu said that he considers this is not opportune as early elections will anyway take place in four months. He stressed that before demanding that the prosecutor general, the head of the National Financial Market Commission and the director of the Security and Information Service be dismissed, Vlad Filat should have discussed the issue within the alliance. “The reforms, changes, corruption combating do not result from statements. Deeds are needed,” he said. Mihai Ghimpu stated the situation in Moldova has worsened because there is no direct communication between the leaders of the ruling alliance as they interact through the press. On November 18, the Parliament is to elect the head of state. Under the alliance constitution agreement, the AEI’s candidate for the presidency is Marian Lupu, who repeatedly said yet that he does not stick to this post. The Communist Party said they are ready to negotiate an apolitical candidate, but did not give names.
