Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea, who heads the Democratic Action Party (PAD), announced that he is preparing a new bill with amendments to the Law on the Election of the President. He will also file a new challenge to the Constitutional Court as he doubts the constitutionality of certain legislative provisions that regulate the election of the head of state, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The election of the President must be a responsible and clear procedure. It is not right for the Constitutional Court to impose common sense norms. The bill that the PAD prepares centers on the shortcomings existing in the legislation. We will present the bill and will call on civil society to take part in public debates before submitting it to Parliament,” Mihai Godea said in a press briefing.
He stated that he will ask again the Constitutional Court to pronounce on some of the provisions concerning the election of the head of state, but avoided giving details. “We think the reasonable timeframe within which the President must be elected should not exceed 30 days. The process of debates and negotiations on identifying a compromise candidate must be transparent and open and involve the entire political class, the mass media and other interested players,” said Mihai Godea.
He described the Constitutional Court’s decision whereby the December 16 presidential elections were declared unconstitutional as a victory against the dishonest political and group interests. “This decision will help Moldova return to normality and legality. We call on the parliamentary parties to treat the process of electing the President with maximum responsibility,” stressed Mihai Godea, adding there is now no impediment to holding a wide dialogue to identify solutions to the political crisis.
