Mihai Popșoi at Atlantic Council: U.S. support has helped strengthen Moldova's resilience

The United States of America has helped Moldova become a stronger partner that is more anchored in the free world, and the authorities in Chisinau are looking forward to strengthening this partnership, especially in the fields of security and investment, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated at a public debate staged by the Atlantic Council in Washington, IPN reports.

The Moldovan official positively appreciated the "peace by force" policy promoted by the Trump administration, stressing that this is the only approach that the Kremlin understands. "We are looking forward to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in the interests of the Ukrainian people – a brave people that have shown the whole world that they can resist not just three days, as some estimated at the beginning of the war, but more than three years," Mihai Popșoi said, quoted in a press release.

The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Moldova's firm support for Ukraine and expressed hope that the peace process will start soon and that stability will be restored in the region. "We want to develop our economies, cultivate the land for the benefit of the people and be reliable partners for our friends in the U.S., Europe and beyond," noted the minister.

In another development, the official stressed that Moldova is no longer dependent on Gazprom, thanks to the diversification of energy sources and the increase in the share of renewable energies. "Today, we have reaffirmed our sovereignty. We maintain stability in the Transnistrian region, even in the face of an artificial crisis generated by the Kremlin in January, when gas supplies to the region were arbitrarily interrupted. The Moldovan society resisted, and our citizens sent a clear message: the legitimate aspiration of our people is integration into the European Union," said Mihai Popșoi.

The official drew attention to the fact that the Republic of Moldova has been a testing ground for Russia's hybrid tactics. "Our partners have every interest in supporting us in increasing resilience so that we can share this experience with others. Investments in border police, intelligence and customs services – made in cooperation with the U.S. – made Moldova safer from organized crime, human and drug trafficking," said the foreign minister.
