Moldova’s European course depends on today’s vote in Parliament, opinions

If the Leanca Government is not voted in on May 30, the risk of early legislative elections is imminent and the PCRM has real chances to return to power. If this happens, the Republic of Moldova will definitely lose the chance to become part of the European Union, consider political analysts and commentators, who gave a news conference on the eve, IPN reports.

Arcadie Barbarosie, executive director of the Public Policy Institute (IPP), said that the Republic of Moldova is implementing 84 projects financed by the development partners. Most of these projects must have the political support of the Government. The tranches for these projects will not come until the executive is acting. “We were warned not only once that our European course will be affected if the initialling of already negotiated documents will be delayed,” said the analyst. He added that if Parliament does not vote Iurie Leanca Prime Minister, there is a great risk that the PCRM will return to power. This means pro-Asian strategic orientation that is harmful to Moldova.

Olga Nicolenco, expert in communication and electoral strategies, reminded that according to studies, 54% of the Moldovans are disappointed by the present administration. If the new Government is voted in on Thursday, the percentage of disappointed persons will decrease significantly. “We should present the pro-European course. There are certain conditions that should be respected. We must implement strategies and change our mentality,” she stated. According to her, if the PCRM returns to power, problems will again appear related to the freedom of the press and transparency.

Viorel Cibotaru, director of the European Institute for Political Studies of Moldova, said that the political crisis can be overcome based on a simple equation, while the task of every party is to vote for the new Government. “This Government should finalize the agreements and go to the Summit in Vilnius to receive the certificate showing that we went though this process. If we don’t do this now, there will be no prospects as regards the next date,” he stated.

The executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy “Adept” Igor Botan said that Moldova is so weak and powerless that it cannot afford oscillations in its external behaviour. “If we lose the European partners’ trust now, it will be for a long time and there will be no other trustworthy partner. The Eastern partners will also not ‘court’ the county as they will know that Moldova lost any other option,” he said.

On May 30, Prime Minister designate Iurie Leanca will present his team and the government program in Parliament. To be invested, the Government must gain the support of at least 51 MPs of the 101. The legislature’s sitting starts at 2pm.
