PCRM says it will vote only for an apolitical head of state

The Communists Party (PCRM) believes the President of Moldova can be elected only if an apolitical candidate is proposed for this post, the party's chairman Vladimir Voronin said in the program “In PROfunzime” on Pro TV Chisinau on January 24 in the evening, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Communist leader said there are a number of politically unaffiliated candidates whom the PCRM would support, but avoided giving names, saying he will do it when the date of elections is announced. “It's time for those who now hold a majority in Parliament to call elections for the President of Moldova, in accordance with the Constitution. We will see then who that independent candidate outside the legislative body will be,” Vladimir Voronin said. He reiterated that the PCRM will no way vote in favor of Marian Lupu. According to Voronin, if a PCRM-PDM coalition had been formed, Marian Lupu had would obtained only the post of Head of Parliament. Moreover, the PCRM abandoned the constitutional amendment proposal allowing for the election of the head of state in Parliament within three rounds of voting, by a simple majority of votes in the last round. “The candidate for the post of President of Moldova must have different qualities than the Speaker, who is the oldest MP,” said Vladimir Voronin. Earlier, members of the PCRM said the political crisis can be overcome by forming a wide coalition, fielding an apolitical candidate for the presidency or holding early elections.
