Valeriu Troenco is the new candidate for the post of minister of defense put forward by the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR), the party’s head Ion Hadarca told the journalists. The PLR’s Political Bureau unanimously accepted this candidate, who is to be presented to Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports.

Valeriu Troenco, 57, is a jurist by profession. He held the post of Deputy Minister of Justice and director of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions. In September 2000, he was promoted to the special rank of general-major of justice by the then President Petru Lucinschi.

In 2002, he was elected as president of the Chisinau League of Officers and a member of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy.

The earlier proposed candidate Vitali Catana was rejected.
