The protests against the mixed-member electoral system continued on July 21. After picketing the State Residency for about an hour, the protesters marched to the square before the Parliament Building, being accompanied by Andrei Nastase and Maia Sandu, the leaders of the extraparliamentary parties “Platform Dignity and Truth” and “Action and Solidarity”, IPN reports.

“We came to protest against Plahotniuc and Dodon. The two represent evil. They do not know how to govern a country. They rob us. We sound the alarm so that at least our grandchildren live better. We must get rid of Plahotniuc and Dodon. If we do not put up resistance, the two individuals will subdue our grandchildren too,” said Gheorghe Caus, a resident of Chisinau municipality.

“We came here to express our disagreement with yesterday’s vote of the Parliament. They adopted a law to enable the ruling bandits to continue to keep their seats long. If we do not protest, the bandits will feel very well,” said Chisinau inhabitant Valentina Banaga.

“We protest because we want to remove this corrupt government. Several years ago, Igor Dodon was on the people’s side. We mounted protests together with him. He was against Plahotniuc, but now allied himself with Plahotniuc and subjugates the country. We can no longer endure. They deride the people. They say they work for the people’s benefit, but actually do it for their own benefit,” stated Eugenia Dogari from Durlesti.

In the protest staged before the Parliament Building, at the suggestion of Andrei Nastase, the protesters agreed to mount a new protest in the same place at midday on July 30.

The bill to introduce the mixed-member electoral system was passed by Parliament in the second reading on July 20. In several hours, President Igor Dodon promulgated the law and this was published in the Official Gazette on July 21. The new electoral system will be implemented in the next legislative elections.
