Senior officials offer condolences to Alexandru Mosanu’s family

The senior state officials transmitted their condolences to the grieving family and all those who praised Alexandru Mosanu. “We learned about the death of Moldova’s first Speaker of Parliament Alexandru Mosanu with profound sadness. Alexandru Mosanu distinguished himself as a remarkable historian, university lecturer and doctor habilitate of historical sciences. He was an active participant in the major changes that occurred in our country since the obtaining of independence and played an important role in strengthening the democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova,” says the obituary signed by President Igor Dodon, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and Prime Minister Pavel Filip, IPN reports.

As a Speaker of Parliament (1990-1993) and an MP (1990-1998), Alexandru Mosanu remains one of the most prominent figures in Moldova’s history. For his contribution to developing democracy and the rule of law principles, Alexandru Mosanu was conferred the highest Parliament award – Medal of Democracy.

Romania’s Embassy in Chisinau also expressed its great regret at the death of politician, historian and ex-Speaker of Parliament of Moldova Alexandru Mosanu. “We lose today an ardent supporter of the national and European cause in the Republic of Moldova. We express our sincere condolences and regret to the family, relatives, friends and all those who were close to him,” says the embassy’s message.

Alexandru Mosanu was born in Braniste commune of Balti County, which then formed part of the Kingdom of Romania, on July 19, 1932. He studied at the Faculty of History. In 1957-1976, he worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Since 1976, he taught at the Faculty of History of the State University of Moldova. In 1989-1990, he held the post of president of the Association of Historians of Moldova. From 1994, he worked as the editor-in-chief of the history and culture magazine “Destin Romanesc” (“Romanian Destiny”). Alexandru Mosanu was doctor habilitate of historical sciences and a member of honor of the Romanian Academy. He was awarded the Oder of the Star of Romania, in the rank of Grand Officer.

Alexandru Mosanu died on December 7 at the age of 85.
