Supreme Council of Magistracy fields Mihai Poalelungi for presidency of Supreme Court of Justice

Mihai Poalelungi was nominated for the presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice and is to be confirmed to this post by Parliament. Such a decision was taken by the Supreme Council of Magistracy by ten votes of 11 in favor on February 9. Council member Tatiana Raducanu expressed a different opinion. This will be made public later, IPN reports.

Supreme Council of Magistracy chairman Victor Micu told the journalists that they respected the procedure and announced a contest and Mihai Poalelungi applied for the vacancy. This is a very good candidate. He was assessed by the Selection Board and got a very high score given his experience.

During the Council’s deliberations, members and supporters of the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” and of the Political Party “Our Party” protested against the nomination of Mihai Poalelungi for the post of president of the Supreme Court of Justice. These chanted “One more revolution, the only solution!” and “Poalelungi, don’t forget, your home is in jail!”. The protesters noted that Mihai Poalelungi is suspected of acts of corruption and this is the man of the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc.

In a message published by the U.S. Embassy on a social networking site, Ambassador James Pettit asks: “What’s happening at the Supreme Court of Magistrates? A single inside candidate? Is this what judicial sector reform is supposed to look like?”

The decision as to the appointment of Mihai Poalelungi as president of the Supreme Court of Justice is to be taken by Parliament.
