Supreme Court of Justice confirms legality of Gagauz elections

The Supreme Court of Justice confirmed the legality and results of the elections for the Governor of Gagauzia held on December 26, 2010. Miahil Formuzal polled the largest number of votes and was thus reelected as Governor of the region. The challenges submitted to court by his opponent Nicolai Dudoglo were rejected as groundless. The mayor of Comrat is considering appealing the decision to the ECHR, Info-Prim Neo reports. The verdict passed by the Supreme Court of Justice brought the trials involving Nicolai Dudoglo and Mihail Formuzal to an end. The first complained about serious violations of the electoral legislation in the autonomous unit during the elections and demanded rerunning the elections. On January 24, the Comrat Court of Appeals confirmed the legality of the elections, but Nicolai Dudoglo challenged the competence of the panel of judges and the case was sent to the Supreme Court of Justice. After several hearings, the Court rejected all the complaints filed by the mayor of Comrat and his supporters. It was also confirmed that the identified violations could not influence the election outcome. The Court’s decision is final. Roman Aronov, lawyer for Nicolai Dudoglo at the Supreme Court of Justice, told Info-Prim Neo that the mayor of Comrat is considering the possibility of suing the Moldovan state at the European Court of Human Rights. “Nicolai Dudoglo considers that the Moldovan authorities violated his right to be elected, which is guaranteed by the European Convention, and the right to a fair trial,” said the lawyer.
