Ion Sturza nominated for Prime Minister

President Nicolae Timofti signed a decree by which he nominates businessman and ex-Premier Ion Sturza for the post of Prime Minister. The head of state is hopeful that the parliamentary groups will review their options and will support this candidate, IPN reports.

“I signed the decree by which Ion Sturza is nominated for premiership. He held this post earlier and has the necessary experience. He is a known person and has views about the country’s European course that are close to ours. He knows well the problems faced in the economic and financial sectors, the general state in society and I hope he will manage to solve the problems faced by the country,” said Nicolae Timofti.

The President voiced hope that the MPs will analyze the situation and will take a positive decision, in accordance with his position. “It can happen otherwise when there is democracy, but I hope that it will be fine. I hope he will secure the necessary number of votes. There are chances. Mister Sturza will also have consultations with the parliamentary groups. When I met with representatives of the groups, not all of these expressed readiness to support him. But I hope they will reconsider their views,” he stated.

Ion Sturza thanked the head of state for the confidence he put in him. “I want to be near the people and the country’s President. In these difficult moments, I will make effort to open discussions with the parties in an attempt to form a Government that I see politically unaffiliated, consisting of persons who are not directly exposed politically. My first action will be to sign an integrity code that will bring new people to the Government. I hope I will have a constructive dialogue with the parliamentary parties,” said the candidate.

Asked about his relationship with the Democratic Party, Ion Sturza said there is no tension between him and the PDM. “I made some statements as citizen Ion Sturza earlier. Now there is candidate Sturza, who I think will be able to manage the relations. I will make effort to open discussions with parties tomorrow in the morning,” stated Ion Sturza.

Four days ago, Ion Sturza told a news conference that he never discussed his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister. He noted he was firmly convinced that any proposal of such a kind would destabilize the situation in the Republic of Moldova. Moreover, Sturza said he didn’t think there were at least 20 MPs who would openly vote for candidate Sturza and thus he would not accept to take part in this game.

Ion Sturza held the post of Prime Minister in February – December 1999.
