MP Sîrbu: Voting system couldn’t be changed irrespective of today’s CC ruling

Democrat lawmaker Sergiu Sîrbu says changing the voting system before holding snap elections would have been unfeasible either way, and today’s ruling of the Constitutional Court only confirmed the obvious: that numerous restrictions exist, with some dictated by international practice.

“Even the duo Maia-Năstase know that, but they still promote it as justification for why they are pushing the country into snap elections. This is a total hoax and it has nothing to do with the actual priorities of the people, who just want politicians to solve social problems instead of fighting wars in the media”, Sîrbu posted to Facebook.

Responding to a request for constitutional interpretation from three independent MPs, the Constitutional Court today ruled that snap elections may only be held under the same system as that used in the ordinary elections. Under the ruling, Parliament may change the system in intervals shorter than a full four-year term, but this doesn’t apply to early elections. Another restriction is that the electoral system may only be changed at least one year before ordinary elections.

Maia Sandu, the co-president of the bloc ACUM, has accused the Constitutional Court of violating its own earlier decisions “according to which electoral matters are the exclusive prerogative of Parliament”.
